Dr. Towfighi is the Director of Neurological Services and Innovation for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (LAC-DHS) and Associate Chief Medical Officer and Chair of the Neurology Department at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center.

She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Political Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and her Doctor of Medicine from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She completed her internship in Internal Medicine at Harvard/Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and completed her Neurology Residency in the Harvard Partners Neurology Program (Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital). She completed a Neurovascular Fellowship at University of California, Los Angeles. She is currently Associate Professor of Neurology at University of Southern California.

She has published extensively on sex, race/ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in stroke occurrence and outcomes, and is currently testing two interventions designed to address disparities in post-stroke care. For her research in stroke epidemiology and prevention, she received the prestigious 2012 Robert G. Siekert New Investigator in Stroke Award from the American Heart Association and 2013 Michael S. Pessin Stroke Leadership Prize from the American Academy of Neurology.
